For Use on Bare or Stained Wood Surfaces
Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane is specially formulated to
withstand the worst environmental conditions. Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane
provides a finish that protects your wood from the damages of rain and moisture.
Special ultraviolet absorbers help protect your wood from the graying and fading
effects of the sun. Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane also contains special oils
to help the finish expand and contract with your wood as the seasons and the
temperature change.
SURFACE PREPARATION: Surfaces must be dry and free from
lacquer, shellac, paint, wax, grease, stearates and polishes. Sand to obtain a
smooth, uniform surface. Remove all dust. Old finishes in poor condition must be
removed.
*Note: Before using Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane, you
can stain unfinished interior wood with Minwax® Wood Finish™.
DIRECTIONS:
1. For Helmsman Satin and Semi Gloss: STIR WELL BEFORE AND
DURING USE -- Never Shake.
For Helmsman Gloss: DO NOT STIR -- Use right out of the can.
2. Apply a thin coat of Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane
using a high quality brush. On unfinished wood, apply sufficient material to
seal open joints, edges and end-grain.
3. Let dry at least six hours, then sand entire surface
lightly with very fine sandpaper to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion.
Remove all dust.
4. Apply second coat. If a third coat is desired, repeat
Step 3 before applying.
Note: For exterior surfaces or for previously unfinished wood, three coats
are recommended.
5. After final coat, allow 24 hours before normal use.
CLEANUP: For easy cleanup use mineral spirits or paint
thinner
COVERAGE: Approximately 100 sq. ft. per quart.
*Note: Dry times are based on good ventilation, temperature
of 77°F and 50% relative humidity. Lower temperature, higher humidity, lack of
air movement or application of thick coats will extend drying times. Always test
surface for tackiness between coats. When used for exterior applications,
maintain by lightly sanding and adding an additional coats as conditions
require. Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane is not recommended for large,
exterior surfaces where maintenance would be difficult, such as decks and
siding. Slight ambering may be experienced when Minwax® Helmsman® Spar
Urethane is applied over light-colored stains or wood surfaces. Always spot test
in an inconspicuous area to ensure satisfactory results.
DANGER: Keep Out of Reach of Children. Combustible. Contains
petroleum distillates. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Skin irritant. Avoid skin
contact. Avoid inhalation of vapors. Use only with adequate ventilation. Keep
away from heat and open flame.
FIRST AID: If swallowed: DO NOT induce vomiting. Call a
physician immediately. If splashed on skin: Immediately wash with plenty of soap
and water. If irritation persists, get medical attention. If affected by
inhalation: Move to fresh air. If symptoms persist, get medical attention.
SOLVENT: Non-photochemically reactive.
This product contains a maximum of 3.8 pounds of V.O.C. per gallon of coating
(450 g/l). Thinning not recommended.
