Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane contains special ultraviolet absorbers to
help protect wood from the graying and fading effects of the sun. Minwax®
Helmsman® Spar Urethane also contains special oils to help the finish expand
and contract with the wood as the seasons and temperatures change.
Q. Can Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane be used over Minwax® Wood
Finish™ stains?
Yes, as long as it is understood that exposure to the sun may eventually
lighten the wood.
Q. Can Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane be used on interior floors?
No. Floors have different requirements than those of outdoor furniture.
Rather than being able to expand and contract with temperature swings, a floor
needs a harder, less flexible finish such as Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane.
Q. Is Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane suitable for an exterior
deck?
No. A deck is an exterior floor--it requires a different type of finish than
exterior furniture. For decks, use penetrating finishes which are formulated
specifically for decks.
Q. Should Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane be applied to exterior
furniture?
Yes, but no clear exterior finish will permanently protect wood against
direct sun, snow, ice and rain. Be sure to check the finish annually to
determine if it needs to be recoated. If the finish warrants, apply an
additional coat of Minwax® Helmsman® according to the label directions.
Q. Can Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane be applied to
pressure-treated wood?
Yes.
